Things people wonder about

Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea after a lockout?

A deadbolt keyed on both sides is sometimes suggested for doors with glass beside them, but on a main escape door it means finding a key to get out. A door people use to leave the home should open from the inside without a key or special knowledge, especially in an emergency. A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, paired with a reinforced strike and a proper glass film if needed, keeps both security and a clear way out. Home Lockout Service

Our storefront lock freezes every winter. What do you do about it?

On the day, the cylinder is thawed with lock de-icer or gentle warmth, never hot water or a flame near aluminium, and dried before a moisture-shedding dry lubricant goes in. To stop the pattern, the keyway gets a cover on the most exposed door, salt is kept off the bottom rail, and the closer is adjusted for cold fluid so the door still latches. A cylinder that freezes yearly may be better placed or shielded. Business Lockout Service

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture. Broken Key Extraction

The intruder found our spare keys. What should be rekeyed?

Everything those keys fit. That usually means the front, back and side doors, the garage man-door, the mailbox and any padlocks, and in a rental the suite door with the landlord's involvement. Rekeying changes a serviceable cylinder to answer to a new key, and a cylinder that cannot be rekeyed is replaced instead. Doing every affected opening in one visit, keyed alike where the cylinders are compatible, means no forgotten door still answers to the stolen ring. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Can the entry door of my condo suite be rekeyed?

Often, but check with your property management first. Condominium corporations have a right to enter a unit on reasonable notice, and without notice in an emergency, and many buildings ask that suite doors stay on a system the corporation can open or that a key be lodged with management. Lobby, garage and locker-room doors belong to the corporation and are theirs to manage. A locksmith will ask about your building's rule and work within it. Lock Rekeying

How do I look after a deadbolt once it is installed?

Very little is needed. Each spring and autumn, lock the door from inside and feel whether the bolt still goes home without the door being pulled; if it hesitates, the door has moved with the season and a small strike adjustment restores it. Whatever lubricant the lock's own maker specifies keeps it smooth, often a dry PTFE or graphite type in the keyway and along the bolt, though some cylinders are meant to be serviced with oil. In winter, wipe road salt off the outside trim to protect the finish. Deadbolt Installation

Can every door in the house work from one key?

Yes, provided the cylinders share a compatible keyway, which the locksmith checks when choosing hardware. New cylinders are pinned on site to a single new key and any existing locks worth keeping are repinned to match. Front, back, side and garage doors commonly end up on one key, and a shed or gate padlock can join them. You then decide how many copies exist and who holds each. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Is it worth repairing an old mortise lock instead of replacing it?

Usually, yes. The mechanisms are simple and robust, and what fails is nearly always a spring, dried grease or wear on one part, all of which are repairable on a bench. Replacing the lock with a modern cylindrical set means boring a large hole through the door stile and filling the old pocket, which is more work and changes the door for good. A rebuilt case keeps the original trim and keeps the door intact. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

Can you help with a safe found in an inherited or estate property with no records at all?

Yes. The locksmith identifies the safe directly from its hardware, brand plate if one survives, and physical layout, then proceeds with the same manipulation, decoding or reset options used on any safe with an unknown history. Documentation such as a will, an executor's letter or a property transfer establishes your authority to have it opened. Safe Opening & Combination Change

Will anchoring damage my flooring?

Anchoring leaves small holes at the anchor points, sized to the bolts being used, and on a finished floor these sit under the safe itself where they are never seen again. On tile, the risk of cracking nearby tiles is real enough that an alternative fastening point or a different spot in the room is often chosen instead of drilling straight through the tile itself. Safe Installation & Servicing

What about the glass panel next to my front door?

A sidelight within reach of the inside thumb-turn is the weak point of an otherwise strong door, since a broken pane lets a hand reach the turn. Options include moving the deadbolt further from the glass, a lock function that needs a key inside as well, or a laminated pane. Because everyone must still be able to leave easily, the locksmith talks through the trade-offs and helps you pick the arrangement that suits your household. High Security Locks

Will every old key stop working once you are done?

Every old key that operated a cylinder included in the plan will stop working, and the locksmith proves it by trying old keys at each door before leaving. Old keys keep working only at openings you chose to leave alone, which are written on the chart so there is no confusion. If a master key existed, it is tested too, since a forgotten master is the most common way an old key stays alive. Commercial Rekeying

Can cleaners or contractors get limited access without a master key?

Yes. A change key or a narrow sub-master covering only the areas they service is the usual approach, rather than handing over a level that reaches further than the job requires. Where the property uses keypad or card access alongside mechanical keys, a time-limited or role-specific electronic credential can serve the same purpose without a physical key changing hands at all. Master Key System Design

What information should we have ready before the visit?

It helps to know which doors should be controlled, roughly how many people will need a credential, whether any of those doors are also fire exits, and who in the business will administer the system afterward. A floor plan or a walk-through on site fills in anything easier to show than describe, and neither is required in advance. Access Control Installation

What should I have ready before the visit?

Knowing the intended use of the room, roughly how many people it holds, whether any doors are already fire-rated, and whether any of them are part of a pair helps the locksmith bring the right devices. If a fire inspector or building official has already given a note about the opening, having that note or its reference number on hand keeps the visit focused on what was actually flagged. Two adults discussing a key fob beside a parked car. — Car Lockout Service, Brantford

Car Keys

There is a dog inside and the car is getting hot. Who do I call?

Call 911, and the provincial animal protection line if you cannot reach the owner; the province asks the public to report animals left in hot or cold vehicles rather than break glass themselves. Police and animal welfare inspectors have authority to enter a vehicle for an animal in distress. A locksmith can attend as well, and if you are the owner, the same careful opening gets you and the dog reunited with the car undamaged. Car Lockout Service

Does the car have to be towed to a shop?

Often not. The cutting machine, blanks and programming tool travel in the van, and the work is done where the car sits: a driveway, a parking garage, the roadside or a workplace lot. The locksmith connects to the diagnostic port under the dash and cuts and programs on the spot. An unsupported or dealer-only system may still need the vehicle to go to a dealer or a suitably equipped shop, which the VIN check flags beforehand. Car Key Replacement

What should I bring to the appointment?

Bring the vehicle, its existing key, photo identification, and something that ties you to the vehicle: registration, or a document showing you are authorized to hold a key if the car belongs to someone else, such as an employer or a family member. Knowing the VIN in advance, printed or photographed from the door jamb, also helps the locksmith confirm the exact key system before arriving. Spare Car Key Duplication

How do I know if my fob just needs a new battery?

A fob that has gone quiet, but whose mechanical blade still opens the door normally, is very often a battery rather than a programming problem. A fresh coin-cell battery, sized to what that fob calls for, is worth trying before assuming anything electronic has failed. If a new battery changes nothing, the fault sits somewhere else in the fob or the vehicle's memory. Key Fob Programming
