In plain words

Keys break for a reason, and finding that reason is half the visit. A brass key wears thinnest at its deepest cut, and after years of turning it fatigues there until a cold morning or a stiff bolt finishes it. Sometimes the lock is the culprit: grit in the keyway, a loose cap, worn pins, or a door that has dropped so the bolt binds and the key takes the strain. The extraction removes the piece; the inspection that follows tells you whether the lock needs a clean and lubricant, an adjustment, or a new cylinder, so it does not happen again next month.

Overnight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway. One more push and it sheared off flush with the face of the cylinder. There is nothing left to grip, and the cold is not helping.

How the visit goes

Technician in a cap fitting a black mortise lock case into the edge of a wooden door beside an old knob plate.
  1. 1

What happened in the second before it broke

Your account of the break is evidence. A key that snapped while you were turning against resistance points to ice, a binding bolt or a swollen door. One that broke as you pushed it in suggests grit or a damaged pin in the keyway. A key that had been sticking for weeks and finally gave up hints at worn pins or a loose cylinder cap. A key that simply cracked at a deep cut with no drama was probably fatigued metal. Each story leads to a different check after the piece is out, so a few honest sentences about the moment save guesswork later.

  2. 2

Cutting the key you leave with

Once the lock is clear, a replacement key is made. The two halves of the broken key are laid together and the cuts are read with a key gauge, or the locksmith cuts from the key code if you have the tag or the lock's records, or from a crisp spare. What is avoided is copying a worn original, because a duplicate inherits every rounded cut and will stick and wear the same way. The new key is cut on a code machine, tried in the lock with the door open, then closed, and from both sides. Extra copies are cut from the new key while the machine is set.

  3. 3

Your car key, rebuilt rather than replaced

For a vehicle, the head of the key that carries the transponder chip and remote buttons has usually been saved, and a new blade cut and fitted to it, so the car recognizes the key as it always did. The door lock and ignition have been tested with it, and the ignition wafers checked for damage from the break. It is a good moment to have a second complete key made, since a car with one key is a car one snap away from a tow. Lightening the key ring so it does not hang on the ignition adds years to both key and cylinder.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    When you call

Whatever hour you call about a broken key extraction — morning, evening, a weekend or a holiday — the amount is the same. Locksmiths are reachable at any time, and the exact figure is confirmed on site once the technician has seen how deep the fragment sits.

  2. 2

    Locked or unlocked door

If the door is locked, the extraction is followed by opening it, which is quoted as its own part of the visit. If the door is open, the work is extraction and securing.

  3. 3

    Vehicle key electronics

Fitting a new blade to a chip head, or moving the chip and remote into a new shell, is separate from the extraction and quoted as such, as is any ignition check.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Broken Key Extraction: questions

Advice · (548) 900-9717

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture.

How long does the extraction usually take?

It depends on how the piece is sitting. A protruding fragment in a plug at rest can be out in moments. A deep piece behind lifted pins takes patient work with hooks and spirals. A glued or corroded fragment may mean removing the cylinder and freeing it from behind. Cutting and testing the new key, and any door adjustment, add their own time. The locksmith gives a sense of it after the first look.

Can you extract a key from a padlock, mailbox or filing cabinet?

Yes. Small cylinders in padlocks, mailboxes, desk drawers, filing cabinets and cam locks on lockers hold a fragment the same way a door does, and the same slim hooks and spirals fit them. Their keyways are narrower, so it is finer work. Where a padlock is not worth saving, the locksmith will say so and offer a cut-off and a new padlock keyed to your preference instead.

What the census means at the door

63%

Older homes. About 63% of homes in Brantford were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing is mostly older, many entries still have only a knob lock and no deadbolt at all. Adding one is a straightforward job on a solid wood door, and it is the single upgrade that changes most for a house of this kind.

61%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 61% of homes in Brantford (2021 Census).

Detached houses collect hardware from every renovation. A locksmith visiting one often finds three keyways, two finishes and one door that never latched right. Sorting all of that into a consistent, working set is a satisfying afternoon's work.
