In plain words

Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours. Rekeying leaves all of that alone and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the pin stack on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a different key runs it. For hardware in good condition, that is the sensible choice: the door looks and feels as it did while the old key is retired. A worn cylinder can be replaced and keyed to match the rest in the same visit.

Sound familiar?

You let a part-time employee go on Friday. The shop key is on a ring in their apartment, or their car, or a friend's kitchen, and on Monday morning the register and the stock room open with it.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Confirming who is asking for the change

A rekey decides who can open a door from now on, so the locksmith starts by confirming that the person asking has the standing to decide. Photo identification matched to the address does it for an owner. A tenant shows a lease or a recent bill along with identification, and mentions whether the landlord knows. A property manager or superintendent shows the management connection and says which units or doors are theirs to authorise. None of this is suspicion; it is the same care that stops a stranger with a convincing story from having your own locks reset against you. When something is missing, the locksmith says what would settle it and waits.

  2. 2

Dealing with the electronic things on the ring

A rekey covers the mechanical keys; the visit also tidies what sat beside them. If a garage door remote was lost, the opener's memory is cleared at the unit on the ceiling so every remote is forgotten, and the ones still in the household are paired again. A keypad lock that shares a door with a rekeyed cylinder has its user codes reviewed and any code the lost ring's owner knew is changed. A building fob or parking card is reported to the property manager for deactivation, and the locksmith can make that call with you. A car key with a chip is booked as separate automotive work.

  3. 3

When to think about rekeying again

Rekeying is a repeatable act, and after this visit you know what triggers it. Moving into a new home, because previous occupants and their helpers may hold copies. A contractor or tenant leaving without handing a key back. A separation or a change of roommates. A ring lost with anything that names your address. Manufacturers list exactly these moments, and a household that treats them as routine stays in control of its doors for decades with the same hardware. The locks on the door today can be repinned many more times; only the small pins and the keys change each time.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Number of keys cut

New keys are cut on site and counted individually. Two for a couple or six for a household with teenagers and a sitter: name the number and the quote reflects it.

  2. 2

The kind of lock each cylinder lives in

Knob, lever, deadbolt, mortise and rim cylinders come out of the door differently and take different care to refit. A mortise cylinder in a century home is more involved than a builder-grade knob.

  3. 3

    Upgrades chosen during the visit

Some people take the moment to move to a heavier deadbolt, a restricted keyway, a reinforced strike or a lockbox for the spare. None of it is required; each option is a separate line.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions

Advice · (548) 900-9717

Can I just have another key cut instead?

You can, and it solves being without a key. It leaves the lost one working, though, which is the half of the problem that keeps people awake. Rekeying takes about as much effort as a trip to a hardware store counter and ends with a new key in your hand and the old one retired. If the key was mislaid somewhere it will never be found and named nothing, a plain copy is a fair choice.

What is a restricted keyway, and is it worth having?

A restricted keyway uses a controlled key profile whose blanks are supplied only through an authorised channel; the credential required, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement or a key card, depends on the system. Rekeying such a cylinder is routine work with the right pin kit. For a household that has just lost a key and wants the next one to be truly countable, it is a sensible upgrade for the main doors, and it can be fitted during the same visit.

The ring was stolen with my wallet and licence. What changes?

The priority. A stolen wallet gives the holder your address, and the ring gives them the key to it, so the rekey moves to the front of the queue and the locksmith says so when you call. The work itself is the same: every cylinder the key fitted is repinned and new keys are cut. It helps to list the doors on the phone so the right pin kits and blanks are on the van when it arrives.

What the census means at the door

63%

Older homes. About 63% of homes in Brantford were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Period hardware on older homes deserves matching parts, not a mismatched modern set. A locksmith who works among such houses keeps finishes and styles that suit them, so a repaired or replaced lock still looks like it belongs to the door.

61%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 61% of homes in Brantford (2021 Census).

A detached house gives a locksmith room to work: full access to both sides of every door, hinges and frames included. Repairs and upgrades can be thorough, from the front deadbolt to the gate latch, with nothing off limits.
