In plain words

Businesses call for this service for two different reasons that sometimes overlap: protecting cash held overnight, and protecting paper records that would be enormously slow to recreate. The two priorities point toward different construction, since a cash-rated body resists tools while a document-rated interior resists heat and holds its temperature down through a timed fire test. Servicing an existing unit follows the same split: bolt-work and lock mechanics get physical attention, while any fire-rated lining is checked for the trapped moisture that builds up behind an airtight seal.

Sound familiar?

Behind the filing cabinets sits a heavy floor safe nobody ever bolted down, left exactly as the last owner set it. It opens fine, but a determined pair of hands could simply tip it into a van.

How the visit goes

Technician in a cap fitting a black mortise lock case into the edge of a wooden door beside an old knob plate. — West Brant
  1. 1

Where the safe will actually be used, not just placed

A safe tucked into a spot nobody can reach easily gets used less often than intended, and one left in plain view of every visitor invites attention it does not need. The locksmith talks through how often the safe will be opened, by how many people, and at what time of day, since a till safe opened every hour wants a different position than a document safe opened twice a year. Concealment behind a panel or inside a closet is weighed against how practical daily access needs to stay.

  2. 2

Moving a safe without moving the problem with it

Relocating a bolted-down safe starts with removing the existing anchors cleanly, since a broken bolt left in the floor becomes someone else's problem later. The safe is walked or wheeled out on equipment built for its weight, with the route measured in advance so it clears every doorway and turn. At the new address the same assessment happens as for a brand-new installation: the floor or wall is identified, the safe is leveled, and it is anchored again from scratch rather than assumed to sit safely just because it once did elsewhere.

  3. 3

What changes if the household or business grows

A safe sized for today's cash float or paper files can be outgrown well before it wears out, and it is worth thinking about that possibility rather than assuming the same unit fits forever. A second smaller safe for a different purpose, an upgraded rating as a business takes on more overnight cash, or an additional user code as staff changes are all changes that build on the existing installation rather than replacing it outright.

In the van

  • Nine-volt backup battery
  • Level and floor shims
  • Rated safe (burglary and fire)
  • Torque wrench and socket set
  • Moving dolly and floor protection

What affects the quote

  1. 1

Size and weight of the safe

A larger, heavier unit needs more capable moving equipment and more time to position safely than a compact document safe, which shows up in the labour involved rather than the hardware itself.

  2. 2

    Floor or wall construction

Solid concrete, a wood subfloor reaching into joists, and tile each call for a different anchoring approach and different hardware, and the substrate is confirmed before any drilling begins.

  3. 3

Number of safes handled in one visit

A single unit is the simplest visit, while a property with a till safe, a document safe, and a smaller personal safe in another room involves more total work in one call-out.

Safe Installation & Servicing: questions

Advice · (548) 900-9717

Will anchoring damage my flooring?

Anchoring leaves small holes at the anchor points, sized to the bolts being used, and on a finished floor these sit under the safe itself where they are never seen again. On tile, the risk of cracking nearby tiles is real enough that an alternative fastening point or a different spot in the room is often chosen instead of drilling straight through the tile itself.

What kind of floor can a safe be anchored to?

Solid concrete is the most straightforward surface, taking a masonry anchor bolt directly. A wood subfloor works too, provided the anchoring reaches into the floor joists beneath the surface layer rather than just the plywood or the flooring on top. Tile is the awkward case, since a bolt through it tends to crack the surrounding tiles, and an alternative anchoring point or a different spot in the room is usually the better route there.

What is the difference between a fire rating and a burglary rating?

They come from two different kinds of tests, and burglary ratings are not all one kind either. Some are timed in minutes, measuring how long a trained attempt with real tools takes to force the door open; others are construction classifications based on steel thickness rather than a timed attack. A fire rating is measured in hours, from a furnace test tracking how hot the interior gets while the outside reaches roughly 850 to 1,000 degrees Celsius. A high number on one says nothing about the other.

What the census means at the door

63%

Older homes. About 63% of homes in Brantford were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where most homes were built decades ago, doors often still carry their original mortise locks and brass knobs. That hardware can usually be cleaned, re-sprung and kept in service, with a modern deadbolt added above it for strength without losing the look.

61%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 61% of homes in Brantford (2021 Census).

Detached homes are exposed to weather on every side, so exterior locks see rain, salt and freezing air directly. Choosing hardware with a good finish and a cylinder that tolerates cold, then lubricating it properly, keeps every door turning through winter.
